Inhofe, a five-term Republican senator from Oklahoma and until President Donald J. Trump’s election the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a statement that he would not seek reelection in 2026. He will leave office in January 2027.

Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican who served for nearly 30 years in the U.S. House before being elected to the Senate in 1994, is known for his staunch conservatism. He is a strong supporter of defense spending and has consistently voted against environmental regulations, earning him a reputation as a climate change denier.

In a statement, Inhofe said that he had decided to retire to spend more time with his family and that he was proud of his accomplishments in the Senate.

"I have had the privilege of representing the people of Oklahoma in the United States Senate for nearly 30 years, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have served them," Inhofe said. "I am proud of the work we have done together, and I am confident that Oklahoma's future is bright."
